  • Cannabis produces cannabinoids primarily in their acidic forms, with tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) being one of the most important. In its natural state, THCa is non-intoxicating. When cannabis is heated—whether through smoking, vaping, or baking—decarboxylation occurs. This chemical reaction removes a carboxyl group from THCa, transforming it into Δ9-THC, the psychoactive form most people associate with cannabis. This process typically begins when temperatures rise above ~220°F.

    Testing Methods

To measure cannabinoids accurately, laboratories use one of two main techniques:
    • Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS): This method heats the sample before analysis. Because heat decarboxylates cannabinoids, GC-MS results tend to show higher neutral cannabinoid levels (like THC) and lower acidic cannabinoid levels (like THCa).
    • Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS): This method does not heat the sample, allowing labs to quantify both acidic (THCa) and neutral (THC) cannabinoids. LC-MS/MS is the industry standard for accuracy and is the preferred method for modern cannabis testing.

    Why This Matters

Recognizing the difference between THCa and THC is essential for:
    • Understanding why raw cannabis is not psychoactive until it is heated.
    • Interpreting lab results correctly, especially when comparing flower to extracts.
    • Debunking common myths and misinformation about cannabis chemistry.
